Self-Portrait Challenge

I love running across really neat blog posting ideas. Well, it wasn't my idea but someone else's.  In this case Lanaya from Raising-Reagan saw this on Nurse Loves Farmer and she saw it originally from The Paper Mama. Kind of like the whole your mothers 2nd cousin on her mothers 4th aunts side. HAHA.
My self-portrait for the challenge is below for this year’s challenge and I’m also going to play 11 Things
Here are the rules:
  1. Post a photo of yourself
  2.  Answer the questions set for you in the original post.
  3. Create 11 new questions and ask people to answer them(I just snagged the original 11).

Chelsey from The Paper Mama started this challenge some time ago and I am really glad she did.  I often hide from the camera because I just dislike how it turns out.  She was talking about how hard it is to avoid negative comments from other people and no matter how many good ones you get that one bad one will stick out.  It really makes me wonder why people are so ugly in their ways.  I can only come up with that they are so unhappy in their own lives they want to make other hurt. Ultimately, everyone is beautiful in their own way.  Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.  Inside out beauty.  I could go on and on, but I will spare you...THIS TIME. : )

Make a Shelf Light Out of a VOX Liquor Bottle

I am in love with this bottle!  Circles and lined glass, I knew it would be perfect for this red light.  I always have to get my husband to drill the holes, because he has the man power to drill through the glass. I am the water sprayer.  : )  We did it together.  Wash your bottle out first and let it dry.  Use some teamwork to drill through the bottle.  In order to prevent the glass from becoming to stressed and cracking you need to spray water every so often to wash away the glass dust and cool down the bit.

Normally we use a smaller diamond bit and end up having to double drill.  This time we went to Lowe's and picked up a large diamond bit for $24 and it did the trick the first time.  I strung a 35 count red holiday light set through the hole and my husband pulled the lights up with a stretched out close hanger.  The kids kind of took it over though....night light.

Sparkly Red Candle Holders

Remember the glittery Epsom salt Fire and Ice candle holders I made for New Years?  Well, I decided to remake them.  I like them better being red anyway.  I Mod Podged the outsides of the glasses mixed with red glitter.  I let it dry and sprinkled red glitter on the outside. I painted the inside with red, pink and pearl blended. The bottoms were already pearled so I just ran the paint brush after painting the inside of the glasses along the bottom of the glass for a more blended color. That salt is stuck in the glasses like cement so I figured why mess with it.  Put a finishing coat of Mod Podge to prevent a glitter mess.

On the left is what it looked like from the first project.

What works for YOU???

This weeks theme is weight or inches.  Yep, weight on the scale really is a biggie in ones mind.  The number sticks in my mind, but the reality check is always when I go to try on clothes or go for my favorite pair of jeans and they just don't button.  So with that being said, for me it is inches.  It doesn't matter how much that scale shows, no one can see your weight displayed.  My mid section doesn't love me, so it makes it to where most clothes do not fit me. I know if my mid section was smaller my size options would open greatly.  It wouldn't matter how much I weighed.  I really could care less in how much I weigh...unless I have to share that information, then my cheeks are turning pink.  Clothes are really made by measurements not by pounds.  I want inches in all the right places and not in the wrong ones.

Love Knots~ Pretzels and Chocolate

Rolos
Straight pretzels
Regular pretzels

So easy and so yummy.  Salty and sweet together in harmony.

Place your Rolos upside down on the regular pretzels and place on top of parchment paper and place in the microwave for a few seconds.  Take out and flip your Rolo pretzel onto the straight pretzel at a slant and let cool and set.   They do look like little knots. : )  Another option is lay the flat pretzel out and melt your Rolo on top and press a pecan in the center.  That is how they are actually supposed to be made, but I didn't have any pecans.

I tried a toaster oven, but it made the tops of the Rolos a little crispy.  You can put them in the oven at 200 until they melt too. I was being impatient so I threw them in the microwave.  They tasted the same as the ones that were put in the toaster oven, but less crispy.  I threw them in a box with plastic hearts meant for a table scatter and tissue paper. Simple enough!  My loving husband got me those beautiful roses when he came on last Tuesday.

See that little zebra dragon fly?  Well, my mom is so talented and artsy she makes and sells these to flower shops.  She makes butterflies, dragonflies and other wired designs at different sizes.  Want some, let me know and we will come up with something.  They could be used for more than in flower bouquets.  Clips and other girly accessories are also an option.  I will do a post in the future with a few designs that my mom made.

DIY Valentine Cards

The Valentines we bought for K's class didn't have teacher cards on the back, so we had to make some.
This was really easy and did not cost a lot.  It makes needing special cards easier to make in a jiffy that much  easier.

Blank index card
2 Foam hearts
Ribbon
Heart Hole Punch
A birdie with heart wings stamp
3 Hershey kisses

*Fold the index card in half.
*Punch 3 holes at the bottom with the heart puncher.
*Glue the pink heart down and then the red on top.
*Stamp your bird in the inside.
*Glue your Hershey kisses in the shape of a heart.

Tape your special message on the outside and tie together with a ribbon.  Holiday hole punchers can be found on the scrap booking isle at Walmart for .97.  Well, that is where they are in the stores here.  You can find them other places as well, but I am not sure on the price.

Random Acts of Kindness with Chocolate

We got together for a Valentines Day Hoopla with fellow mommas at the park to celebrate.  I thought how else to celebrate and spread cheer to others by giving out free chocolate.  The kids ran around and handed out Hershey kisses with our url on it.  Spreading the word of our group was a plus.

This was the box I made for neighbors; my little ones and my big one(hubby).
Each Hershey kiss is wrapped in a mini cupcake wrapper and taped around the top with the Hershey kiss paper sticking out the top.  The personalized ones are regular sized cupcake wrappers with 2 kisses in them.

My son did a wonderful job helping put kisses in each paper and twisting them for me to tape.  He loved being able to help out.  He said "Momma, we should have a treat for doing something nice".  It made me laugh and I told him "Yeah, your right we are working hard huh".  : )  He said "Shooo, it IS hard work".  The things a 4 year old says.  He is awfully creative in trying to get some treats.

We hope you guys had a lovely heart day.

Make Your Own Mardi Gras Masks

What is more fun than pretending you are a masked character?  There is so many possibilities with making your own masks.  {Masked princesses, superheros, fancy balls, Halloween} My 2 loved pretend playing they were part of a carnival/masquerade ball marching all over the house with the biggest smiles.

Purple Mask:
Glittery Gold Puffy Paint
Glittery Crystal Clear Puffy Paint
Gold and Silver little circles (comes in a glitter pack from $1 tree)
Small Silver Stars
Green Flake Glitter

I went around the mask with gold puffy paint sketch style to spread it out and puff just a little.
Crystal Clear Puffy Paint Circle Eyebrows in dots.

Let dry.
I used the puff paint to go around a little bit of the mask at a time and attached the small gold circles.
Draw a swirl and dots on either side of the eyes.
Attach 2 silver circles with more puff paint on the first eyebrow dot.
Attach 2 small stars on the inner eye corners with puffy paint.

Wand:
2 Wooden skewers
Electrical tape
Gold Glittered/Metallic Ribbon
Purple Ribbon
Yellow Ribbon
Green Ribbon

Put your 2 wooden skewers side by side and wrap the electrical tape up towards the points.
Place a small dot of hot glue at the bottom of the skewers and attach the gold glittered ribbon and wrap all the way down in a slanted style. When you get to the bottom wrap around horizontal at the bottom and attach a small amount of hot glue at the bottom(let cool slightly so you don't burn the mess out your fingers) and press together to seal the bottom.

Cut even lengths from the Purple, Yellow, Gold and Green ribbon.
Tie a knot in the center and glue at the top of the wand.

Line up your wand to the corner of the mask so there is wand at the top and bottom.  Place a small amount of hot glue on your wand and let cool slightly and attach to the mask.

Green Mask:
Glittery Silver Puffy Paint
Glittery Gold Puffy Paint
Silver Paint
Gold Glitter
Purple Bead
2 small and 1 medium silver stars

Twist the purple bead open and size up your bead and decide how long you want your bead.
Make a design with your silver glittered puffy paint in a outward motion surrounding the mask.
Squeeze your puffy paint all around the top where your bead will go.  Place your bead onto the puffy paint and arrange it where it needs to be. Let it dry.  Go back and place a dot of puffy paint on every string in between the beads (let dry and repeat). Go over the beads with a little silver puffy paint and do a scatter spread to cover every bead.

Squeeze out gold puffy paint along the bottom dots of the mask and sprinkle on your gold glitter.  Let dry.
Gold puffy paint with curled eye lashes and line the bottom of the eye hole. Let dry.

Go around the top with a paint brush with a little silver paint in an outward motion.  Puffy paint in the center under the center of the purple bead above the nose and create a swirl to the left and to the right.  Let dry.
Paint over with silver paint.  Let dry.  Attach a medium silver star in the center and 2 small ones on the end of each swirl.

Wand:
2 wooden skewers
Electrical tape
1 purple feather
1 green feather
1 yellow ribbon
2 yellow ribbons tied into baby bows
1 glass bead
Silver/metallic glittered ribbon

Put your 2 wooden skewers side by side and wrap the electrical tape up towards the points.
Place a small dot of hot glue at the bottom of the skewers and attach the silver glittered ribbon and wrap all the way down in a slanted style. When you get to the bottom wrap around horizontal at the bottom and attach a small amount of hot glue at the bottom(let cool slightly) and press together to seal the bottom.

Tie the feather together with your yellow ribbon. Braid your ribbon into the feathers. Attach a small yellow bow at the top and the bottom of the feathers. Glue your glass bead right above the small yellow ribbon that will be right above the mask.

Line up your wand with the mask so the bottom yellow ribbon goes right above the mask.  Place the hot glue on the stick and wait a second for it to cool down so it does not melt your mask.

All Done!

Gold Mask:
Lace and Black Spray Paint

Silver metallic circles
Faux Lead Paint
Glittered Crystal Clear Puffy Paint
1 large silver star
2 purple feathers
2 green feathers
1 yellow feather

Grab a patch of lace an lay it over your mask and lightly go back and forth with you black spray paint.  Let dry.

Line around the eyes with faux lead paint. (see above) After it dries attach each silver circle on the end of each eye lash and let dry.  Go back over all of the eye additions with glittered crystal clear puffy paint.

Attach ribbons from the outside in purple, green, yellow, green and then purple.  Attach feathers to the inside of your mask with hot glue(work fast). Place a line of glue and lightly blow on the glue while you are attaching and lining up your feathers.  My mask only slightly melted but was just fine.  Place glue on the top of the feathers and attach a strip of ribbon across the end of the feathers.  Place a small dot of puffy paint on each feather (around 6) and do not line them up but alternating positions of silver circles on each feather(see above).

Tie your purple ribbon into a bow with the small yellow and green ribbon wrapped in the inside and wrap on the outside of the bow and hot glue in the back. (see above)  Place a line of puffy paint in the center of each ribbons inside loop and sprinkle little silver stars in it.  On the ribbon under the center~ glue a large silver star, a gold circle and a small silver star on top.

Place a dot of puffy paint on the right lower corner of the mask and attach a large silver star.

Wand:
2 Wooden skewers
Electrical tape
Purple ribbon
Yellow ribbon
Green ribbon
Small and Large Silver stars

Put your 2 wooden skewers side by side and wrap the electrical tape up towards the points.
Place a small dot of hot glue at the top of the skewers and attach the purple ribbon wrap in a slant from the right to the left and place a small dot of hot glue to secure at the bottom.  Small dot of hot glue and attach the yellow ribbon and wrap slanted from the left to the right and attach at the bottom with a small dot of hot glue.  Small dot of hot glue and attach the green ribbon and wrap slanted from the right to the left and attach at the bottom with a small dot of hot glue.  Cut a small strip of purple ribbon and glue around the bottom for a clean tip.

*I used the side of scissors to press the ribbon down at the bottom to secure the ribbon with the hot glue so I didn't burn myself.

Same as before, line up your wand and place hot glue on it wait and attach.

It took a few days to actually complete these due to all the drying times.  I love how they turned out.  Oh, don't forget to burn the ends of your ribbons to seal them so they don't fray.

$1 Tree Masks~ They come in a 6 pack. I got the metallic circles and glitter from the $1 Tree; the ribbon was on sale at A.C. Moore 3 for $1; the beads $1 tree for a 8 pack; stars, skewers and tape was a few bucks;  feathers came from Walmart (a few bucks); puffy paint Walmart (3 pack a few bucks); the green glitter was in a 4 pack in the .97 bin on the craft isle at Walmart and the lead paint a few bucks at Micheals. This could easily be a fun craft for the kids to do, but with regular glue.

Cream Cheese Stuffed King Cake

King Cake...yes please.  It actually took me 2 attempts to get it even to the dough stage.  I underestimated the yeast.  : )  I know now what I need to do to be better prepared to make it even more tasty.

I have another King Cake recipe that is completely different and I am sure is just as mouth watering as Mr. Lagasse's recipe.

Where Have You Been!

I decided last week that I had so many things going on that I just didn't have time to jump on the computer like normal.  I did my normal linky parties last week because I have a commitment to them and just couldn't not do them for the week.  I like doing a week at a time for blogging but really need to work on a further out schedule.  Honestly, I get really burned out with the internet, so sometimes I just close the computer and let it be and have a break.  My mind goes blank and I have nothing and when that happens, I know it is time to take a break.  I have been having fun and spending time with my family, doing mommy group stuff and so on.

It really was a sad weekend around our neighborhood. My neighbors son died a week ago and he died this weekend.  They were both older but not old.  The son that died this weekend lived with his mom and has taken care of her for many years.  I can't imagine having to bury your child.  It really made my heart break.  You are supposed to be happy that they get to move on and go on pain free and have eternal life, but I always feel sad when a passing happens.  Anyhoo, enough of the sad stuff.

I feel refreshed and ready to get back on track.  I have been being healthier and recently got Zumba Core and it kills my back around the 6th song...and I KNOW that once I lose more weight my back will feel better and I will be able to do more.  Degenerating discs, damage to my whole lower back with pinched nerves...I fell when I was 23 and it really busted my back.  I used to be a manager for 3rd shift at a restaurant and I had both my arms stacked with plates of food to deliver to a take and I walked out of the kitchen and  fell.....I did only drop 1 of the plates, so that was pretty awesome.  I wish I would have dropped them all and caught myself with my hands instead of falling straight down.  The dish washer was scrubbing the floor right outside the doorway with a bunch of soap and I didn't know so I walked right out and busted my behind.  I am unable to do some exercises or stand up/sit down for long periods of time without extreme pain.  Although my weight loss this week had me wanting to do a happy dance.  The last 2 weeks have been not so good so I was happy there was a change this week.  I won't share until tomorrow, because that is when the diet bet starts and want to stick to the schedule.  Normally, I weigh in on Mondays though.

Here are the projects I worked on last week:

Eating Better while on the Run

If you are in need for support, friendly advice and motivation....Slim by the Summer is a really great option.  It has been a blessing to me.  I do not like to fail in front of other people..I suppose it is a pride thing.  It is okay because I REALLY needed that push to get healthier before I hit my next age milestone in a few months. Interested?  Click the photo and join us!  We are starting our Diet Bet tomorrow and that is always exciting.

Slim by The Summer topic this week:

I am a drive-thru fan...convenience and no dishes.  I can't say it always makes me feel good, because 99.9% of the time afterwards I regret it and my stomach reminds me of how unwise a choice it was.  We have really slacked off on eating out.  We normally eat out maybe 1 or 2 times a weekend.  Sometimes we spend the whole day out and are not home or we get home too late and that is when our eating out happens.  I am not perfect and I love food, so I try to make the best choices possible while sticking to a healthier lifestyle.

How do you prevent having all of your calorie intake for the day blown away by just one meal anyway?

Slim by the Summer ``Double Time``

Okay, so week 3 was

Okay so I am A LOVER of anything with cheese...in it, on it, around it.  Like seriously obsessed!

I am a sugar addict....coffee drinks, chocolate, warm donuts....yeah I know.   I LOVE good soul food...fried chicken, homemade biscuits, chicken pot pie, po-boys and every other unhealthy thing that warms the soul.

So 1 thing I seriously NEED to change is my time schedule.  As long as I stay on top of the sugar/cheese thing I can conquer it.  Not a biggie...everything in moderation.  Hard but super doable.   I try really hard to eat at certain times and it is my hardest task in trying to have a healthier lifestyle.  I am totally against the word DIET.  It makes me fail when I think I am on a diet.  Changing my diet, YES....being on a diet, NO!  Changing my diet in order to have a healthier body. {Insert Smile}

On to my NEED to change, TIME.  I get side tracked and get to doing other things and don't eat.  Sometimes I sleep a little later on days that I have to be up at 3:45am and when I go back to sleep I am super tired when I have to wake up a short time later.   It not only throws my day off sleep wise but meal planning wise.  I have turned into an insomniac over the last few years...so that is a work in progress.  A battle in itself.   I have to remember to eat at certain times so my stomach is not growling and I end up eating more than I would have if I would have just done it when I needed to.

<For this week> Week 4

I used to think eating healthy was full of no flavor and it was having to force down a meal while holding your nose and still starving in the end.  Not a good habit to show the kids.  : )

When I discovered this book, my whole healthy food sucks was gone.  Some healthy food does suck, but those won't be on the menu.

Enchilada Soup, Dad's Chicken and Green Chili, Taco salad pasta, Taco Salad, Chicken Parmesan, Cajun Chicken Pasta, Chocolate Mousse.....mmmm.  Plus, so much more.  Some really tasty recipes.  I plan on sharing them in future posts.

I love chicken and broccoli.  My new favorite burger substitute is ground chicken burgers.  My go to I have to have sugar NOW is vanilla yogurt and frozen blueberries.  Favorite snack that satisfies is boiled egg whites and fruit. If I am wanting pizza...which I love...I go with some spinach and cheese with white sauce thin crust pizza.   Alright...that is all my rambling for now.  Stay tuned ya'll.

DIY~ Invisible Bookshelf

I was browsing through the new Pottery Barn catalogs scanning for project ideas, I saw some covered books and I loved them.   I plan on doing more in the future and that will be a future post.  It was super easy and I love the look.  I decided that I was going to try out the covered book and then turn it into an invisible bookshelf. : )
