Saturday Creations Spotlighting~ Sarah Lynn's Sweets!

My name is Sarah Lynn and I blog over at Sarah Lynn's Sweets. I'm so excited to be posting on Consider Me Inspired. My blog is full of delicious recipes and creative cake decor ideas. Today's recipe is a great way to utilize old, leftover cake.
Have you ever had to throw away a cake or cupcakes?  It happens a lot to me, and it seems like such a waste!  Not only am I throwing out a once delicious treat, but also tossing out what took time (and money) to make.  If I test out a recipe for my blog, my husband and I will have a serving or two, but end up having a lot leftover that gets tossed.  Even if I try to reduce the amount, it is just hard to bake for two!
I've also been doing more cake orders lately, and always seem to have leftover cupcakes or "oops" cakes.   This past weekend, for example, I had an order for a vanilla cake, chocolate smash cake, and a dozen cupcakes.  I decided not to throw out any of extra batter, so I used it to make additional cupcakes. I like having some backups anyway for a paid order, there always seems to be one cupcake that doesn't quite rise enough (or too much). So I ended up with 6 extra cupcakes.
Leftover cupcakes just sitting around and drying out
I also had an "oops" cake from the weekend.  I'm not sure what happened, but one of my vanilla cakes got stuck in the pan and broke apart when I tried to get it out.  I almost never have that problem (using lots of cooking spray and waiting the recommended 10 min cooling period), but this time a whole chunk was stuck in the pan.  So, I decided to bake a new one and thus had an "oops" cake.
My poor, broken "oops" cake
I hadn't thrown any of the cake away yet as I thought I might make more buttercream and we would be able to eat a little of it. Like I said, I really hate throwing any of it out! But after a couple days, they were starting to harden and it was clear we weren't going to eat them. I was about to throw it out when I remembered a post I once saw on a favorite blog of mine, Cupcake Project.  The blogger, Stephanie, had shared how she made sweet croutons out of uneaten cupcakes.  I decided to give it a try.  While you don't want to use an extremely old cake (for food safety reasons), it's ok if they are a little stale. The croutons are easy to make in the oven, they just take a little time.  If you have a dehydrator, check out Stephanie's directions on making the croutons that way. Below is the oven method. Chocolate Croutons ingredients:
  • Mixture of 1/8 cup brown sugar and 1/8 cup sugar (or whatever spices you want)
  • Chocolate cupcakes
Chocolate Crouton instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 275F
  • Unwrap cupcakes and remove all icing
  • Cut up cupcakes (or cake) into crouton size cubes (I got around 15 from a single cupcake)
  • Create spice mixture and cover with croutons
  • Shake off excess spices and crumbs and then place croutons on cookie sheet (cover cookie sheet with parchment paper for easier clean-up
  • Cook for 25 mins
  • Carefully flip croutons over
  • Cook for another 25 mins (or until they are dried out)
I did the exact same method with the vanilla cake, chopping it up into croutons. For that cake, though, I tried equal parts cinnamon and sugar, with a pinch of nutmeg.  These were delicious as well!
These sweet croutons are tasty and so versatile, the possibilities are endless!  You can add whatever spices you want (cinnamon, sugar, brown sugar, nutmeg, etc). Here's just a few ways to use them:
  • Snack on alone - one cupcake made around 15 so you can eat quite a few without a lot of guilt
  • Crumble up to use in pudding
  • Compliment to coffee (think biscotti)
  • Flavor enhancer to coffee or hot chocolate (the vanilla/chocolate/spices will infuse in drink)
  • Mixed in with diced fresh fruit, for a bit of a crunch
  • Crumble or as a whole with ice cream/yogurt
I used the croutons in two ways.  I crumbled up the vanilla cake croutons in a bowl of pudding.  I added the chocolate croutons to hot chocolate and left some as a treat.
Full arrangement of my croutons to share with others

So excited to try out new spices and uses for the croutons in the future!

Thank you SO MUCH Sarah for linking up with us each week for "Inspirations in Progress."   We enjoyed having you as a host and as our spotlighted blogger this week!  I am ready to have some leftover cake so I can try these cake croutons outs!  How bout' you?

Please go visit Sarah over at Sarah Lynn's Sweets and let here know how much you love her cake croutons creation!

Real Life Housework~ Happy To Do it....

I am doing a new chart system in the house to get better organized and to organize my family.  Searching for the perfect clip art takes FOREVER.  I am pretty much done with my kids clip art for their charts and I decided well heck, I mine as well do one for me too.  I do tend to put housework off for longer periods then I probably should.  Any way, I happened to bing/google mom doing housework, cleaning clip art etc...

Let me tell you what popped in my head while searching the images:
1. I am never happy to do housework
2. No, I will not smile while I am doing it like it is the best thing I have done all day and it is my highlight.
3. Umm...no sexy outfits and high heals while cleaning.
4. You won't see me smiling just ready to get at the cleaning. I try to get it done as quickly as possible.

Why is it that all of the pictures look like the mom just has nothing under control or is mad, emotionless or she is whatevering it?  She is So busy that she is all crazified. Making up my own words : ) Animals everywhere....looks like lazy husbands, kids always crying.  Maybe on some days...if I googled stressed out, that is what I would expect to find.

I am more like this:

By time I start there is literally crap everywhere. I am trying to clean as I go most days, but that does not always work. I have little tornadoes making the cleaning up for nothing phrase stand strong. I like to clean at night. It helps the house be nice and clean when we all wake up and I have time to do other things. I normally am in a zone when I am cleaning and it just goes by so much faster.

I am no June Cleaver, but hey maybe one day.  Well, I want to be in control still, but I want to have that magical clean house and dinner made button under control.

Well, I am off to do a 4 hour cleaning job...just kidding...maybe. :) Have a great weekend.

What kind of house cleaner are you?

Jelly Bean Poem/Prayer/Verses and a Craft!

I like to make everything my own and by reviewing MANY of the same yet different ending poems/prayers here is the one that will be gracing its presence in our home from here on out during Easter.  I did add and remove some from the bottom section.

Chick and Bunny Cup Craft

We made these cute little candy cups!  I actually took these last year and it was pre-blogger days and I had did this as a tutorial as a post for the Green Thumbs and Glue Guns sections as a tutorial for others in the moms forums.  Basic crafting...no instructions just pretty self explanatory in the photos.

The orange was the beek and the arms.  We used tape, because glue just didn't cut it.

My daughter and I did these together.  My son really could care less about this kind of stuff last year.  K finished the decorating and picked all the colors for the accessories.  Pink eye lashes on the little chicken...purple nosed bunny with pink and yellow whiskers.  Fun times right.  Love it!

Saturday Creations Spotlighting- KID APPROVED!

My name is Olga,
My Photo
I am a mama to four adorable rambunctious children. I blog at Kid Approved
Kid Approved
My blog is mostly about sewing adventures for my children.  I am super excited to be guest posting at Consider Me Inspired

I am looking out of the window as I type this and I can't see bushes in the front yard. They are buried in snow. As a matter of fact, I can't see much of anything accept snow. There is so much snow that if you are not careful you can probably lose a small child in the snow bank. Yet, we are hopeful here in North Pole Midwest. We are all optimists and know that spring is coming. And what better way to welcome it than sew some bright flowery pants.

Pants are easy to make and you can adjust the fit so they look just right on your child. I often add an adjustable waistband because I like the fit better. It is quite simple to do even if you don't have the right elastic, the kind that has small holes in it.

1. Measure around waist of the pants and make a waistband that fits.

2. Decide how far you want the elastic to go - just in the back,  or slightly in front as well. Mark the spots and sew a buttonhole on each side. Add a  button next to the buttonhole. (It's hard to see in the picture, but there is a button next to the buttonhole.

3. With right sides together attach the waistband to the pants.

4. Insert the elastic in to the waistband using a safety pin. If you don't have the elastic needed, make your own. It will only work with knit elastic.

You are done!

Blogspot Blogger Commenting Problems

If you have a blogspot blog, I can not comment for some reason. I have to actually get a different device and do so. I am sorry for the inconvenience.  I do see your comments but I can not even reply on my own blog. So frustrating and I am searching for a solution.  My laptop will not work at all in commenting.

* Not in Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer.
* I have cleared my cache over and over.
*Embedded has always worked just fine with allowing me to reply to comments left.  Over the last 2 months it has stopped working.  I tried Full Page and Pop Up...and that lets me comment on my own blog but I am not 100% sure but I think the only way the original comment gets the reply via email is if I reply directly to the comment.  It will not let me.

I recently tried the options on someone else's blogspot comment section with every single option I could and NOTHING!  It lets me type the entire message and I hit publish and bam...into internet land never to be seen again.

I am unable to even comment on my own blog until recently and I have to do it as a non reply comment.   I just want all of you blogspot users know that I am very sorry for the inconvenience and I am not ignoring anyone, but it just is not working.  I can only comment if I grab my tablet and do so.  I do not always have it, so if you get a reply it is because I happened to be using the tablet.  I decided to go with a social route as I will Tweet your page or share it on Facebook as I was here kind of thing.

I just am not a die hard blogger, so I really don't want to pay for a domain and switch to wordpress or else I would have done that already.  I like being a casual/hobby blogger, but I REALLY wish it would work right. I mean seriously, is that too much to ask for!  COME ON BLOGGER....get it together man!  Rant over.

Anyone have any other solutions to cure my pain?

Make your own Egg Maracas!

A inexpensive way to explore different sounds and for the kids to have some fun.   I set out different sized beans, rice, and different beads and we tested out each sound before the kids decided which sounds they liked the best.

Jamming...and Working it!

My other love in life besides the obvious ones....yes even more than crafting.  I really love music.  There is a song for everything.  If you feel it, think it or maybe even need an answer, there IS a song out there for it.   Music makes my soul happy, it makes words that I can't find come to light and even ones I didn't even know make sense in some kind of way.  Love, pain, sadness, craziness and jams that just get your blood pumping and kicks that motivation in gear.

Saint Patty's Day Hair Barrette

I made this for my daughter recently to wear to school on St. Patty's Day, BUT I didn't realize it fell on a Sunday.  She still wore it and loved it.  I thought about doing the whole clover hair design with the separate mini pony tails, however, I just know she would come back home looking like she was struck by lightning.   I have no clue what she is doing at school, but some days she comes home and it looks like her hair has never seen a brush. Crazy child. : )

Okay, so here is the cute little clip I made.
http://onecreativeprocrastinatinggal.blogspot.com/

http://onecreativeprocrastinatinggal.blogspot.com/

2 piece of white pipe cleaner
2 piece of light green pipe cleaner
2 strand of thin green ribbon a little longer than the pipe cleaners.

Braid 1 white, 1 green and 1 ribbon strand together loosely.  The first set will make 2 loops and shape the last one to shape. Twist them into a clover shape.  Cut the extra pipe cleaner/ribbon off.

Triple fold the orange ribbon after cutting and burning the ends. Hot glue to the barrette.

Place 1 gem/jewel in the center with hot glue.  Go around with gold glitter puffy paint. Place 1 line of gold glitter puffy paint in a line on the orange ribbon. Let dry.

It was not heavy at all and turned out cute as a side hair clippie.

* I decided that sparkly, pearly white ribbon you see in the above photo did not fit too well so I omitted it.

Mustache Cash Stash- Novelty Straws

The kids heard mustache cash stash on a cartoon and it stuck.  I decided to give the whole mustache thing a go.  I ran across this scrap booking sheet at Micheals and knew it would be perfect.  These were super easy to make and they would be great at a get together for a laugh.

Pot O' Gold Brownies

Trouble Spot.....

http://onecreativeprocrastinatinggal.blogspot.com/

Slim by the Summer~ Wow, are we really already on week 8?!

My trouble spot IS.....my mid-section.   In my family that seems to be the area hit when you get older.  I have always felt my mid section was just a bit bigger than what I wanted it to be at the bottom part.  I once had a 6 pack and I worked out daily.  I would ride my bike to the near by elementary schools track and would walk up to 4 miles, then I would ride my bike back to my maw maw's house a few blocks away.  My aunt(2 years older) and I would have crunch/sit up competitions...yes really.  The most in a trial(throughout a few hours) with her and I was around 500.  Not a crazy number for a teenager.  It was fun and the competition part of it really amped both of us up to push to our limits.   Now even during those times I was always thick.  I am happy to just be thick and not skinny....size 8 is the jean size I like to be at.  Haven't seen that in a LONG time.
